What is your concept? (Be thorough & specific. Review the links on Blackboard) | A girl who takes school seriously and is friends with everyone enjoys her last year in high school with her boyfriend. All a sudden she gets pregnant and she must decide whether she must choose whether to keep it or not. There are many factors that she must think of and goes through each one through the story. |
How did you conceive the idea for this concept? | On television, there was a lot of controversy popping up around the Roe v. Wade supreme court case, and many girls fear their rights being taken away. We wanted to incorporate this fear into our film. We were already leaning towards a coming-to-age genre for our film, so the struggle with teen pregnancy would fit into that genre. |
What do you believe is unique about your concept? | We want to make sure that we show that this can happen to anyone and emphasize how much of an impact it can have on a girl’s life. The stereotype of a girl who gets pregnant is a wild party-girl and usually there is a stigma where people think they deserve that struggle. We want to break that stereotype. In order to do this, in our film we would develop our main character to be a very studious, kind girl who is in a stable relationship with her boyfriend. |
Why do you believe this product will be of interest to your audience? | We believe it will be interesting to our audience because of the current political climate. With two sides arguing whether abortion should be illegal or not, it will show a perspective of a girl who is conflicted about her choices with abortion. This movie would be related to current events revolving around abortion, which would draw in our audience. |

When presenting our pitch, my partner, Genesis, and I received very supportive feedback. We had more suggestions on what to add to our film than critics about our plot. Most of the suggestions were how to develop the character better in the first two minute of our film because that is very important in order to get our point across that any girl can be in this situation. We did not want dialogue at first to make our film more dramatic, but everyone thought it would be a good idea to have a couple lines. We still think our idea adds a dramatic touch. Another suggestion was about her family life: make her have a caring, single mother. This way, it is easier on us for casting, and it gives the story more flavor.
We want to make sure that our movie is more than just entertainment for the audience. Our goal is for the audience to take something away from our film and be able to have a conversation about in their everyday lives. We don't want to just shows the best part of this girl's life, but the ugly too. Enjoyment is not the only thing that captures the audience's attention, but with "mixed affects accompanied" (Oliver & Hartmann, 2010). In our drama, some of it would be light-hearted, but the beginning would be serious-to keep that mix of emotions. It should be understood that there are many different opinions on what films are entertaining enough because different audiences have different tastes. Our target audience are younger girls; at that age, most of them love the drama genre. In 2018 most of the top movies for teens were dramas. This is why we think our film would be popular among that target audience.
